Why the Pirate and the Princess?

Or, rather, why Han Solo and Princess Leia?

I dressed as Luke Skywalker one Halloween and Princess Leia the next. Other than Princess Leia having side buns and a dress, the costume wasn't all that different. My mom may even have used the same material to create both.

Princess Leia is instantly recognizable, however. As is Han Solo.

They are also both fairly feisty characters. It isn't that Luke isn't worth emulating--but one has to adopt all the father-figure baggage as well as the torched relatives plus Jedi training in a swamp. As the hero with the arc, Luke is to a degree defined by his trials.

Most times, at Halloween, people are trying to drop it all.

Granted, Leia was captured, tortured, and saw a planet get blown up. But she seems the more sensible and down-to-earth of the twins, less likely to get all mystical. That is, she seems less likely to take off--like Paul Atreides--for fate or destiny or the meaning of life (some cosmic something or other).

Han is the same. He gets things done!

So--good personas to slip into, even for one night.

(And the costumes are not that hard to make. Johnny Depp is comparatively more complex.)
