Time to Talk About Chocolate

Valentine's Day is coming soon, so it's time to talk about chocolate!

Finding/making/serving unique chocolate is a trope in manga. In His Favorite, Yoshida is several times "tricked" by Sato into eating chocolates that contain peppers and other spicy items.

In American grocery stores, chocolate-with-unlikely-stuff has become a trend, as well as increasingly dark chocolate, sometimes so dark, one might as well spoon down mouthfuls of unsweetened cocoa powder!

Amusingly enough, however, when the coronavirus first arrived and grocery stores emptied faster than they could be filled (rather the way pets are suffering now--hint: order cat food on Amazon!), the first chocolates to go were the ones with classic fillings: nuts, caramel.

The truly strange chocolates with passion fruit and such lingered and lingered and lingered...

Like many people (our taste buds change somewhat with age), I preferred milk chocolate as a youngster and now prefer semi-sweet or dark-ish. But I still splurge on classic candy bars, from Mounds to Musketeers. No amount of "gourmeting" can diminish the pleasure of comfort food.
