On Golden Girls, John Fiedler plays a nasally, unprepossessing "sex machine" whom all the woman want to date. The joke rests on him NOT being the expected desired date.
The Lotharios below, however, are not jokes. They are geeky--all three are science guys--and lanky and not exactly Chris Hemsworth (he operates as a standard in modern dialog much like Selleck and Burt Reynolds did thirty years ago).
Yet, these geeky lotharios are desired and pursued! Their romancing is not presented as silly or desperate. They are legitimately sexy, smooth talking, and romantic.
One of the most popular is Doc from Love Boat. Played by Bernie Kopell, he has been married--and divorced--multiple times. He regularly competes with other crew members for the attentions of pretty passengers. And he has several on-board romances. Totally questionable behavior these days! But all in good fun on each Love Boat episode.
Joel David Moore, forensic intern, as Fisher on Bones is also a Lothario. In the episode where Fisher, Hodgins, and Sweets attend Avatar--in which movie Joel David Moore had a part!--he misses the film's opening because he and a psychology student are, uh, making out in the tent. And bug guy Hodgins--despite being compared to a Russian icon by his investigator--has regular girlfriends starting in Season 1. And of course, he courts, dates, and marries Angela. He is a true romantic, expressing great pleasure when his coworkers find someone to love.
Geeky auditors as cowboys will follow...
