Karasuma: Laid-Back Hero

In a post about Justin from Secret of Nimh ("Why is Justin in Secret of Nimh So Hot?"), I write, "[S]weet-tempered and heroic is a lethal romantic hero combination!"

A variation on this hero type is the level-headed guy in the suit who looks innocuous and even bland and then turns out to be totally dangerous.

From Inception, my favorite scenes are when Arthur (played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt), back in the (dream) hotel, takes out the bad guys by himself, without losing his cool

Karasuma assessing a student assassin
who also appears benign.

Karasuma from Classroom Assassination falls into this category! At first, he seems to be merely a bureaucrat assigned to Class E. But then, as Koroi Sensei fully knows, he reveals himself to be an assassin par excellence--an assassin, moreover, with a underlying kindly nature, a moral code, and (most importantly!) a gift for teaching.

He has few failings--until the volume at the resort in which Irina attempts to seduce him (for real). It turns out that he is...a little clueless in some matters.

However, my favorite part between him and Irina occurs earlier when she begs him to let her win a contest so she can stay and he says, "Oh, fine."

A laid-back hero learns to pick his battles.
